This portobello mushroom burger recipe will be a hit with vegetarians and meat eaters alike! It’s juicy, meaty, and filled with rich, savory flavor.
Make these portobello mushroom burgers on the grill the next time you need a quick and easy summer dinner! It requires only six ingredients and twenty minutes to prepare, but the result is enormous. A simple balsamic marinade enhances the tangy, savory flavor of the grilled portobello mushrooms, which are luscious and meaty.
We frequently prepare them on weeknights when we’re seeking something good but have little desire to cook. However, like traditional homemade veggie burgers, they are an excellent option for summer cookouts. Served on a toasted bun with all the condiments, they are robust, filling, and utterly delectable. Even carnivores will enjoy them!
Portobello Mushroom Burger Recipe Ingredients
You only need 6 ingredients to make this portobello mushroom burger recipe:
- Portobellos, of course! Look for small to medium-sized ones that will fit nicely on a bun.
- Tamari and balsamic vinegar – They infuse the mushroom caps with a tangy, savory flavor.
- Extra-virgin olive oil – It helps the mushrooms get moist and tender on the grill.
- And salt and pepper – To make all the flavors pop!
How to Make Grilled Portobello Mushrooms
If you’ve never grilled portobello mushrooms before, you won’t believe how easy it is! Just follow these simple steps:
- Start by cleaning the mushrooms. Remove the stems and wipe the caps clean with a moist towel.
- Next, add seasonings. Salt and pepper the portobellos, then generously drizzle them with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and tamari. Use your hands to ensure that they are completely covered; it will be a bit messy, but the better coated they are, the tastier they will be.
- At last, cook! Heat a grill or grill pan to a medium temperature. Put on the mushrooms with the gills facing up. Grill the mushrooms for 5 to 7 minutes per side, or until grill marks appear on the smooth side of the caps and they are soft.
Portobello Mushroom Burger Serving Suggestions
Once the portobello mushrooms are soft and lightly browned, assemble and consume the burgers. My preference is to serve it on handmade bread with mayonnaise, vegan mayonnaise, or chipotle sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and red onions. However, there are numerous alternative ways to outfit these individuals. Here are some suggestions to help you get started:
Keep it simple. The portobello burgers should be served with ketchup and mustard.
Accept summer herbs. In my first cookbook, I provide instructions for a portobello mushroom burger topped with cilantro pepita pesto. If you do not have cilantro on hand, use basil pesto.
Increase the onions. Both pickled red onions and caramelized red onions are excellent burger toppings.
Go Greek. Your burger should be topped with tzatziki, tomatoes, and cucumber.
Alternatively, Southwest. Add guacamole and pineapple or mango salsa for a combination of creaminess, sweetness, and heat. Add a couple of pickled jalapenos for the finishing touch.
For a quick and simple weeknight meal, complement the main dish with a simple salad or grilled corn on the cob. If you are preparing this dish for a barbecue, serve it with traditional picnic sides dishes such as potato salad, coleslaw, pasta salad, broccoli salad, and fruit salad. Enjoy!
